Mikes's Recommendation
Spain is in my blood. Combining sunny days on the Costa del Sol at my favorite resort (El Puente Romano) followed by a journey through historic towns en route to Madrid and Barcelona is a trip I have done and recommended a hundred times. El Puente Romano is in ritzy Marbella yet provides the peace and elegance of a Moorish retreat. Its location on the Mediterranean and unparalleled service make it a great retreat. It's located on a beach front walkway taking one into town for shopping and nightlife. From Marbella one can take excursions to play golf, visit Morocco, learn to windsurf in the Mecca of Tarifa or visit one of a hundred small white washed picturesque towns like Rhonda (make sure you have lunch on the patio at the Parador and see the bull ring). I would then head by train or car to Granada (the Alhambra is a must see). Then to Seville, staying at the Intercontinental Hotel and enjoying an evening filled with flamenco dancing. A high speed train can whisk you to Madrid or you can stop en route to Toledo.

In Madrid the Palace Hotel awaits you along with a city filled with night life, museums, Real Madrid soccer (OK I am a big fan), shopping and more. Be sure to visit the Plaza Mayor - a very popular spot for tourists and locals alike. What many tourists do not know is that tapas (small plates of food) eateries are located in caves underneath the Plaza. El Botin is a popular tourist restaurant in this area as Ernest Hemingway ate there often, yet it's pretty authentic. Your trip can end here or the equivalent of the NY/Washington shuttle can take you to Barcelona for a stroll down the Ramblas and a visit to this former Olympic city. Spain also has beautiful islands (Balearic and Canary). Each region of Spain has it own unique culture and delicacies so that this is a spot worth visiting more than once. My biggest recommendation is to change your lifestyle once in Spain and sleep late, go out late, eat late, and enjoy this county which loves people and families.
